![]() ![]() But all of my minor grievances aside, Country Returns is easily one of the best platformers I have ever played, enhanced in every possible way by all of the amazing QoL changes that this port made. Collectibles can also get pretty cryptic the further in you go, but the game is so generous with the Banana Coins that you’re really better off just taking Squawks with you into every level to avoid unnecessary replays. This is especially true for those soul-crushing secret levels, the only ones I allowed myself to shamelessly abuse these items to get through. If difficulty isn’t your thing, the game does what it can to help you with a plethora of items, but it’s still gonna take quite a bit of effort and skill from your part getting through certain stages. This really is no big deal when looking at the grand scheme of things, as there is just no escaping the fact that Country Returns is REALLY fucking hard. ![]() Some levels like to throw a lot of things at you really fast and it can be sometimes difficult to tell what is and what isn’t a threat without taking damage from it first. This visual downgrade also comes with its fair share of clarity issues too. The visuals do take a significant hit from being crammed into much less powerful hardware, but the control changes that make literally every single aspect of the gameplay undeniably better than the original far outweigh the fact that you’re having to look at a slightly more pixelated gorilla on your screen. But it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows with this version, either. And luckily for me, this 3DS port was all that I needed to finally experience the truly magnificent platforming action of Country Returns in its glorious entirety. However, I did go far enough into it to at least realize how great of a game it was. Perhaps it was just my attention span of a fly or maybe it was the terrible motion controls (and by maybe, I do mean “yes, it ABSOLUTELY was the terrible motion controls”) that kept me from going too far into DKCR. 90% Nintendo 3DSDonkey Kong Country Returns is a game I first crossed paths with on the Nintendo Wii, back when I was just a teeny tiny kid still figuring out which games worked for me and which ones didn’t. ![]()
